Suggest The Dosage For Cipro

I have a prescription for cipro (14 tablets, 250 mg ea.). I am going to South America and will only use it if I develop a stomach ailment that I suspect is bacterial. I lost the accompanying directions from the pharmacy (which is currently closed). What is the recommendation for taking the cipro, i.e. number and frequency?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Based on the history your doctor seems to have prescribed Ciprofloxacin to treat infectious diarrhea apparently caused by the bacteria. The usual dose in such condition is 500 mg tablet to be taken twice daily for 5 to 7 days. In general, continue this drug for at least 2 days after signs & symptoms of infection have disappeared.

- The tablet of Ciprofloxacin should be swallowed as a whole, do not split it into two halves, crush, or chew.
- Avoid taking Ciprofloxacin along with dairy products (milk, yogurt, ice cream, chocolates or cakes).
- Take Ciprofloxacin tablet at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking certain medications like antacids, sucralfate, proton pump inhibitors or iron tablets.
- Maintain adequate hydration to prevent the formation of highly concentrated urine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
