Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father passes out today and was take end to the ear. He has been a diabetic since he was 38 and will be 72 in July. In fairly good shape still plays basketball when possible. The hospital said the blood sugar was fine. Blood work and CAT scan good but is being kept because of low heart rate in the 50s. What is a normal heart rate?
Your father has past history of diabetes, he was diagnosed with a low heart rate. His blood work and CAT scan was good and blood pressure was found to be under control. Normal heart rate in elderly men commonly ranges from 73-74.2 (average resting heart rate (bpm). Your father is suffering from bradycardia, the factors that may cause it are electrolyte imbalance in the blood, low thyroid function, valvular heart disease, Lyme disease, inflammation of the heart muscle, problem with SA and AV node, etc.
He should maintain his blood glucose level under control at all cost. He is suggested to get a complete medical examination done to detect the pathology causing him symptoms and get treated to improve bradycardia. His symptoms should be properly investigated to detect if he needs a pacemaker or not.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
