Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For CHF, Compromised Renal Function, Frequent Atrial Fibrillation And Artritis
84 year old patient with CHF, compromised renal function, frequent Afib, pacemaker dependant, severe arthritis on heavy pain meds is also taking eliquis. We recently stopped trazadone and xannax out of concern for episodes of delirium. I read where eliquis can cause mental acuity issues in a very small percentage of users. I prefer not to remove the eliquis given the risk of stroke but looking for a professional opinion
such a side effect has not been officially reported (at least I couldn't find it in the most recent 'summary of product characteristics'). I've never heard of this side effect either. I wouldn't stop eliquis in a patient with AF unless I had serious concerns about bleeding complications. If you believe that the patient is having side effects, then you should tell it to the treating doctor and perhaps discuss about alternatives.
In patients of this age other causes are far more likely to cause a decrease in mental acuity. Such causes include dementia, electrolyte imbalance, anemia, etc. The compromised renal function itself may cause mental issues.
I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Kind Regards, Dr Panagiotis Zografakis, Internal Medicine Specialist
