Suggest Treatment For Hashimoto S Thyroiditis And Weight Gain

Yes please!!!! I have hyper Hashimoto and am gaining weight!!! I am on 50 mcg of Synthroid and my Thyroid died completely a couple of years ago (it took 12 years to die). I was originally diagnosed with hypo- gained 17 pounds in 2 weeks and was sleeping all the time. Now it is hyper. What can I do? I just turned 67. After it initially died and blood work then showed it at hypo, the weight dropped with dieting, but now it is going up though hyper.

Hi,

1. As there is already inactive thyroid [12 years] thus you are in a state of hypothyroidism [Hashimoto], which is an Autoimmune disease thus conversion of hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism is very rare [so as suggested by you that it might be hyper is not correct], and you might be in a state of myxedema.

2. As it is Autoimmune thyroiditis thus it is best to consult with an Endocrinologist since one has to go for investigations like Thyroid antibodies which may be directed towards thyroglobulin or thyroid cells, thus only management is Thyroxine in full doses starting with a low dose and raising it every month to achieve normal levels of TSH. The average maintenance dose is 125ug/day.

PS. The patient should be told that treatment is for life and Osteoporosis is long term risk of over treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
