Suggest Treatment For Hyponatremia In An Elderly Person

MY mother is 83 years old and admitted to hospital with Hyponatremia recently. Work up done as per medscape work up list and no cause found other than she was taking frusemide. Was on fluid restriction and had 2 litres 0.9% saline in first days. Discharged with improved clinical symptoms and sodium level 125 ( Sodium 117 on admission 9 days previously). I was advised to see a GP for follow up and have blood tests weekly. No advice re diet. Can you advize how long it might take to normalise. I have started to give her some ORS and Himalaya salt to help increase her sodium levels and her fluid restriction continues at 1.2L average each day. 4 more days til GP appointment.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The use of the ORS and the salt would help to prevent future episodes of dehydration.

With the treatment in the hospital and continued treatment at home, her levels are likely normal or close to normal by this point.

Her doctor will recheck at her visit to see where is lies.

I hope this helps
