Suggest Treatment For IBS And Diverticulosis

I have IBS and diverticulosis. I do take amitiza. I had thyroidectomy surgery a week ago, had pain killers but not for too long. I was constipated, kept taking the amitiza and took miralax but did not help. Then I use a dulcolax suppository. It half worked. Had a small bowel movement. Now I have been with cramps and mucus in my unfinished stool. I was told to take magnesium citrate. Should I do that and also take a pill for cramping?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I think you may have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The kind of symptoms you have is more towards IBS and it could be increased by stress or underline psychological disorder. In that case, diagnosis in your case could be a psychosomatic disorder. That means the psychological disorder is aggravating the physical disorder. In your case, you can either try some antidepressant-like tricyclic antidepressant or relaxation exercise after psychiatrist consultation. That would help you to control symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
