Suggest Treatment For PMDD And PCOS

I have polycystic ovaries. I have tried several treatments. Anytime I get my period I also get PMDD. I am on cipralex (and right now metformin-rather than birth control for the PCOS). I am wondering what the possibilities are for treatment of PMDD as I continue to treatment for my PCOS.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is known to be associated with difficulty in conceiving as it is associated with hormonal imbalance causing irregular menstruation and untimely ovulation. Since this is a treatable disorder, you need to have patience during the course of treatment, which are instituted to increase the chances of conception.
Irregular menstruation could be corrected by administration of combined birth control pills. Defective ovulation could be overcome by intake of ovulation inducing drugs like clomiphine and/or metformin.
Also, reduction in weight by means of diet and moderate exercise is know to help in this condition.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is associated with extreme mood shifts. Symptoms generally begin 7 to 10 days before the period starts and continue for the first few days during the period. It is also associated with bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, changes in sleep and eating habits.
At least one of these underlying emotional and behavioral symptoms stands out: Sadness or hopelessness, Anxiety or tension, Extreme moodiness, Marked irritability or anger.
Treatment for PMDD is antidepressants namely Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, supplementation of nutrients like calcium, magnesium, Vitamin B6 and L-Tryptophan. Practicing relaxation techniques and meditation would help to keep mind calm and under control.
Kindly consult Gynecologist for appropriate evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
