Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend has been diagnosed with Paget's disease in the breast and it's in the 4th stage. One dr suggested surgery, another doctor did not mention surgery at all but prescribed her Tamoxifen and asked her to come back in 6 months time. My friend is 59 years old and is in India. What do you think she should do? What is her mortality rate as she has been told by the first dr that it maybe 1.5 years and the 2nd dr said 30 % 5 years with treatment. What do u think?
Hello There are so many controversies about the PAGET'S DISEASE of the breast. After many years of controversy it is now agreed that Paget's disease of the breast is due to slowly growing duct carcinoma that infiltrates the epithelial covering the nipples . Paget's disease is always unilateral , after menopause not in vesicles , does not respond . Now your question about the PROGNOSIS ( survival rate ) It has been written in books that prognosis is always extremely good . As you mentioned that she in 4th stage . If LUMP is palpable and nipple is eroded ( nipple erosion ) the prognosis is less favorable . So it is very difficult to say about the survival time without proper physical examination. So consult one more senior surgeon and get his opinion because physical examination is important. Good luck.
