Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am kidney transplant patient, age -33 , women, diebeties 23 years and open heart surgey after transplant on 2014 Dec, I have been suffering some times urine infection for urine infection doctor has given MARTIFUR 100 MG per day 1 tab but urine r/e checked on 4sept 16 and found pus cells -plenty/HPF , epithelial cells -5-8/HPF pls advise now I will take martifur 100 mg 2 times
Martifur or Nitrofurantoin is a veru good antibiotic which works well against the common organisms causing urinary tract infection. It is many a times prescribed as a long term prophylaxis against UTI.
Since you are a renal transplant recipient, it is very important that you are free of all kinds of infection, especially that of the urinary tract.
Your urine routine report does show plenty of pus cells which is commonly associated with infection. However, I would also like to know the colony count and culture and sensitivity report. You may contact your laboratory and ask for these tests as they will be very helpful in deciding the next course of action.
Till then you may take Martifur twice a day, but do avoid taking any other antibiotic on your own as many need dosage adjustment or may themselves cause kidney damage. You can continue taking your other transplant medications.
Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.
Regards, Dr Geeta
