Suggest Treatment For A Bruise On The Chest After A Fall

Hi. My wife fell while exiting a van a week ago. She did not strike her chest, but the next day she had a large bruise on her upper right chest. It got bigger and spread downward over the next few days, and is now about 6 to 8 inches log and about 4 or 5 inches wide, reaching down to the top of her breast. Her collarbone was a little sore, but not terribly painful. She has taken Motrin for it, which she believes helps the pain, but doesn t help the bruise. This happened while we were in Costa Rica. We are back home in the States now. Should she see the doctor? (She also has developed bouts of diarrhea, sometimes plosive, but I have no idea whether this is related to the bruising.)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is not usual to get such a big bruise with such a minor trauma. I would say that it may be safer if she has an x-ray to see if she fractured the colar bone and also some blood tests to make sure her bleeding and coagulation indexes are normal (CBC, PLT count, ERS, bleeding time, coagulation time, PTT, aPTT, etc).

If all these come out normal then there is nothing to worry about. The bruise should gradually fade away in the next couple of weeks.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

I wish you good health.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
