Hello,
Thank you for your question. Your daughter in law who have terrible pain with cyst on her vagina area. I suspect she has Bartholin's cyst. Bartholin's glands are located at the entrance(
vulva) to a women's vagina. They are small and cannot be seen or felt when they are normal. The blockage of the Bartholin duct is a common etiology of a vulvar mass. The most common Barthalin masses are cysts or abscesses, Bartholin benign tumors and carcinomas are rare. Batholin cyst mean the duct becomes obstructed, mucous produced by the gland accumulate, leading to cystic dilation proximal to the obstruction. Obstruction is often caused by local or diffuse vulvar edema.
Bartholin cysts are usually sterile and the gland is not affected.
Bartholin abscess is an obstructed Bartholin duct can become infected and form an abscess. A Bartholin cyst is typically painless, and may be asymptomatic. Most Bartholin cysts are detected during a routine pelvic examination or by the woman herself. Larger cysts may cause discomfort, typically during sexual intercourse, sitting, or ambulating. Patients may also find the presence of a cyst to be disfiguring, even in the absence of symptoms. Bartholin abscesses typically present with such
severe pain and swelling that patients are unable to walk, sit, or have sexual intercourse. There are many other differential diagnosis of vulvar masses and abscesses. To find out what you have the real problem she has to see her doctor to do more examination and tests. This history of presentation is very important.
Treatment of Bartholin's cyst usually includes sitz baths to promote
drainage, and sometimes includes surgical drainage depending on the severity of the symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics if the cyst become more severe infection or for
recurrent abscess. In some case, an abscess ruptures and drains spontaneously. These patients may only need analgesics or soaking of the genital area with warm compresses or with sits baths. If the purulent material is obtained, we suggest obtaining culture.
See her doctor is her mass continues to enlarge or does not improve within a few days of home treatment,
fever. Her cyst is painful I suggest that an abscess has developed. It needs to be drained.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best regards,
