Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sixteen year old son has a soft lump under his chin about the size of an egg. It is not painful but uncomfortable and he can feel it when he swallows. This has been increasing in size over the last couple of days. GP said go to AandE, AandE said they dont treat lumps and go back to GP please help.
As per your complain soft lump under the chin that is of the size of an egg can be a swollen submental salivary gland that is a major salivary gland. As it is not painful, it can be probably due to obstruction in the duct of the salivary gland due to formation of salivary stones or Sialoliths from the minerals present in saliva.
It can also be due to foreign body obstruction of the duct opening. It leads to resistance in the saliva flow and it causes accumulation of saliva into the gland that leads to expansion of the gland. It can be well evaluated and treated by an oral surgeon.
Consult an oral surgeon and get evaluated and an x-ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and can be treated accordingly. In case of stone formation either manual removal for superficial stones or surgical removal using Sialoscopic guidance can help.
Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
