Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother in law has an abdominal aortic aneurysm measuring 4.8cm AP, 4.6cm transverse, 9.3cm in length. He also has one in his right common iliac artery measuring 1.2 cm and one in the left common iliac artery measuring 1.4 cm and in the proximal suprarenal aorta 2.4 cm AP and 2.2 transverse. I am a nurse and his sister in law and asked him to see cardiology. He made an appointment, but they did not get him in for 3-4 weeks and I am concerned. Should the appointment be moved up. Are these measurements alarming or normal for someone his age. He also has had a triple bypass surgery (open) and has a very strong family history of cardiac disease. Thank you.
These measurements are something that should be monitored, however recommended repair for an abdominal aneurysm is not recommended until it reaches 5.5 cm in diameter in males and 5 cm in females, or it has increased in size over 0.5 cm in 6 months. I'd recommend he continued to be followe closely. His iliac artery aneurysms are not at the size for repair either, usually these are not concerning until at least 2.5 cm.
