Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Bloating, Constipation And Diarrhea In An Elderly Person

I m a 68 year old woman in good health. I have noticed rectal bleeding a number of times recently and twice this evening. I have had bouts of constipation with small dark stools, and also explosive diarrhea, bloating and gas. I m most concerned by the bleeding. I just moved back to California and haven t established with a local doctor. Should I schedule an appointment it go to urgent care?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Rectal bleeding and black stools with changes in bowel movement (a combination of constipation with diarrhea) need proper evaluation. You will need a colonoscopy, FOBT and CBC done to rule out bowel lesions as the cause of the bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
