Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain And Distended Colon

My daughter is 16 years old. In April 2010 she became sick with a mono-like illness that could not be identified. She was extremely tired and was unable to go to school for seven weeks. She also was getting migraines and having body pain. Her spleen was enlarged. She was improving slowing over the summer and then in early August she started to get abdomen pain. She was having regular easy bowel movements. An x-ray of her abdomen showed feces in all parts of her colon with her colon being slightly distended. She did a clean out and then was put on a high fiber diet, 2 Miralax and 2 ex-lax pills a day. She felt somewhat better but still had abdomen pain. In November she got worse. She tried two cleanouts one with Milk of Magnesia that did not work and one with a whole bottle of Miralax and two ex-lax twice a day. Even though she drank a lot she became dehydrated and needed IV liquids. She continued to have abdomen pain, some migraines and body pain. In early April her abdomen pain got worse. An x-ray should fecal matter in all her ascending, traverse and descending colon. She did another clean out and was started on 24 mg of amitiza twice a day along with the same laxatives. This week her abdomen pain got worse. We saw a second gastro pediatric specialist. He said he could feel stool in her colon. Who wants her to do a magnesium citrate clean out and take 8 mg of Amitiza and one dose of Miralax. During all of this time she has had frequent easy bowel movements. She has had extensive blood work with no abnormal findings. She take 50 mg of amtitriptyline to help prevent migraines and body pain. She is an athlete, straight A student with many friends. She is resilient, does not appear to be stressed and is mostly able to continue activities. Although often she is suffering a lot. My daughter is 16 years old. Report Abuse
General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The issue here sounds to be related to malfunction or hypofunction of nerve plexuses mediating the intestine peristalsis as that of Myenteric and Meissener`s complex.

However, if the details of reports and case study are provided, still investigative work up can be figured out in the more precise direction from this stage ahead.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
