Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 8 year old son has abdominal pain that he says are like cramps and vomits only in the evening. We spent 24 hrs in hospital and they tested him for testicular torsion, appendicitis and diabetes. Ruled out gastroenteritis as no dioreha and tests were negative for the above mentioned tests. In saying that no ultrasound was done. We came home two nights ago and have been struggling to get fluids into him. Today was great, he ate a little bit of food and fluid intake was greater. Had a bath and wanted to get out of bed. Tonight his pain has started again and he has vomited. Temperature is 37.1 C. Is he too old to have something like insussception? What are we missing and is there anything else we should be looking at? Any help would be much appreciated thank you.
You have already mentioned the common causes of pain in abdomen in an 8-year-old male like appendicitis, testicular torsion, gastroenteritis and so on, intussusception is possible. Other commonest causes are: Abdominal tonsils that are lymph node enlargement, urinary tract stones and so on. Worm infestation. Hence it is utmost important to undergo the following tests under the guidance of a Pediatric Surgeon: Blod, urine and stool tests. X-ray in standing position. Ultrasonography and CT scan of the abdomen if needed. All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and thus proper management can help to get the cure.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
