Suggest Treatment For Abusive, Violent Behaviour Of A Lady With Extreme Mood Swings

My son s wife has explosive abusive outbursts and doesn t feel there is anything wrong with her, but feels I am crazy. My son is tormented by her unstable moods and fears a divorce for the wife threatens him with never seeing their 21 month year old son and tells him no one in our family will see the child. She is a pathological liar and a master of manipulation and I feel she may have a borderline personality ? How do I deal with her. She puts on a good front but when they leave, she explodes towards my son, hitting him and breaking objects and all this negative behavior is done in front of the young child. How do I get her to realize she needs counseling?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your son's wife shows abusive, violent behavior with extreme mood swings. It is commonly caused due to bipolar disorder. However, such behavior may also get triggered due to clinical depression (caused by substance abuse, use of certain medications, past major event-unrevealed, past abuse, genetics, death/loss, being over ambitious, etc.). Sometimes, the intense mood shifts can range from mania to depression. Not all patients suffer from depression.

Many people with bipolar disorder may experience periods of anger, irritability, and rage. If left untreated such patients may at times become uncontrollable and even dangerous for others. You are suggested to get a treated by treated by a psychiatrist but before that get a complete medical check up done so that treatment can be done. Once she is diagnosed with some mental problem, she will get treatment. If she improves the issues will get solved.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
