Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is two in a half months. She struggles with acid reflux. She s always throwing up after she eats. I have tried several different milks. Right now she s drinking enfamil ar and thats been a lot better than the other brands, but her trow up is almost allway cottage cheese looking. She will even throw up my breast milk. She seem to throw up my breast milk faster than formula. Why is that and why do it look like cottage cheese?
Spitting up, called physiological reflux, is common in babies and is usually normal.Babies get reflux because the muscular valve at the end of the food pipe, which keeps food in the stomach, is still developing. Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day. This is normal as long as your baby is otherwise well.
1)Some causes of excessive spitting up:
-Milk ejection reflex -Food sensitivities - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) -Pyloric stenosis(Regular projectile vomiting in a newborn can be a sign of pyloric stenosis, a stomach problem requiring surgery. occurs 4 times more often in boys than girls and symptoms usually appear between 3 and 5 weeks of age)
2)Tips to minimize spitting up(reflux):
-Breastfeeding. Reflux is less common in breastfed babies. -Reduce or eliminate caffeine in mom’s diet. - Avoid tobacco smoke exposure, as this is a contributing factor to reflux. -Positioning(positions that reduce reflux include lying on the left side and prone (baby on his tummy). Placing the infant in a prone position should be done only when the baby is awake.
Hope this helps Kind regards, Dr.Mersi
