Hi,
Tonsillitis is inflammation of tonsils, most often rapid in onset. Most commonly it is caused due to viral infection, which may be followed by bacterial infection.
When the inflammation produces symptoms such as
high-grade fever,
sore throat, difficulty in swallowing,
nausea and
vomiting, it needs serious consideration for treatment with antibiotics and surgical removal of tonsils by 'tonsillectomy' procedure.
Otherwise, under normal circumstances, as viruses and bacteria enter the body through the nose and mouth, they are filtered in the tonsils. Within the tonsils, white blood cells of the immune system destroy the viruses or bacteria and confer immunity.
Hence, repeated inflammation should not cause much worry as it can be managed symptomatically and by medications.
You can do the following for your child in addition to taking prescribed medications.
1. Salt water gargling with warm water thrice daily.
2. Gargling using antiseptic solutions like Povidine-
Iodine twice daily.
3. Steam inhalation twice daily.
4. Use of decongestant medications when necessary.
Gradually, the number of episodes of recurrence should come down. If it continues, then you need to seek a clinical examination by an
ENT specialist and plan for appropriate management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
