I am having alcohol withdrawal symptoms. I went to the doctor, but they would only recommend an in-patient detox, which I fear I could lose my job over. I've been reading about tapering off methods. Is that something I could consider, and be safe about?
Abrupt stoppage of alcohol use after chronic long term use may result in withdrawal symptoms. Commonly tremors, disorientation, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, craving etc symptoms are seen. In severe cases hallucinations, seizures or later delirium can be seen. As alcohol is a brain depressant to precent its withdrawal benzodiazepines are usually recommended. Commonly chlordiazepoxide, lorazepam etc are used. The drug dose in adjusted according to alcohol use. The gradual tapering of doses are done over 5 days. Anticraving agents like Acamprosate, Naltrexone etc are used to prevent craving. These drugs can be prescribed on OPD basis also. Consult a psychiatrist for treatment, there is no compulsive need to get admitted.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
