Suggest Treatment For Amenorrhea And Weight Loss

I am a woman who has amenorrhea (never having menstrual bleeding all my life). At age 20, I went to see a doctor and that was when I was diagnosed with amenorrhea. The doctor could not really figure out what was wrong with me - the ultrasound of my uterus checked out fine. He thinks I may have problems with my hormones. He put me on birth control pills. I did have regular menstrual bleeding during that time, but after a few months, I stopped due to potential risks/side effects (heart issues, etc.). Since then, amenorrhea returned. I am now 46 years old, overweight (1.7 meters, 95 kg), and generally in good health. I haven t seen a doctor for over 15 years. I have made an appointment to see one for physical check-up soon. So I am nervous and want to educate myself more on amenorrhea before seeing the doctor. From my research, I may have issues with low estrogen, thyroid and/or pituitary gland although it says that most of the symptoms point to weight loss and excessive hair growth. I am the opposite - I can t lose weight and I have thinning hair on top of my head. My armpit hair and pubic hair are normal (not very thick). What do you think may be wrong with me? Also what kind of risks am I at? (Breast cancer? Thyroid cancer? Etc.) Can you guess what kind of recommendations/tests my doctor will give me? Thank you very much.

Hello,

You were diagnosed with amenorrhea at the age of 20. You were treated with birth control pills & you started menstruating but then stopped taking the pills and you are now 45 and are not menstruating. Primary amenorrhea is indicative of structural or congenital problems with your sex organs. It may be suggestive of underdeveloped ovaries or ovaries that are malfunctioning.

Your treating doctor will do imaging tests to diagnose structural abnormalities if any. Secondary amenorrhea will commonly occur due to hormonal imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, PCOS, stress, malnutrition, being overweight or underweight, secretion of male hormones, etc.

Get clinically examined by a Gynae, you may also be referred to a GP if required. Get all required tests and investigations done. Get any congenital or underlying medical condition treated at the earliest. Get screening tests done for ovarian cancer and breast cancer.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
