Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I'm appear to be suffering from an anxiety/panic disorder. At school today we went through an unexpected fire drill that was very panic inducing, in my case. This had happened many times before, where small occurrences – such as, a teacher acknowledging me – causes a great deal of anxiety. Are there any treatments I can give myself for this?
PANIC DISORDER IS A TYPE OF ANXIETY DISORDER WHICH IS CHARACTERIZED BY EPISODIC PAROXYSMAL ANXIETY. IN OTHER WORDS PANIC ATTACKS COME IN EPISODES AND U MAY FEEL TOTALLY NORMAL IN BETWEEN THESE EPISODES. ALTERNATIVELY, IN THE PERIOD OF RELATIVE NORMALCY, SOME PEOPLE GET WORRY ABOUT ANOTHER IMPENDING PANIC ATTACK, WHICH IS CALLED AS ANTICIPATORY ANXIETY.
EITHER WAY IT IS A TOTALLY TREATABLE CONDITION. IN UR CASE, THE PANIC ATTACKS APPEAR TO BE SITUATION-BOUND OR SITUATION-PREDISPOSED. I SUGGEST- 1. TAB CLONAZEPAM 0.25 MG TID. DOSE CAN BE GRADUALLY INCREASED DEPENDING ON THE RESPONSE. TAKE FOR ABOUT 4-6 WEEKS THEN START TAPERING SLOWLY( AT RATE OF 25 PERCENT OF PREVIOUS DOSAGE/WEEK) 2 AN SSRI- U CAN TRY SERTALINE 25 MG FOR 1 WEEK. THEN INCREASE TO 50 MG FOR THE NEXT 8-12 WEEKS
PLAN IS TO TAPER AND STOP CLONAZEPAM AND TO MAINTAIN U ONLY ON AN SSRI LIKE SERTALINE 3. TRY COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY(CBT) AND APPLIED RELAXATION (JPMR, ABDOMINAL BREATHING)
from your history it appears you are suffering from anxiety disorder.if you are having attacks of severe anxiety with palpitation , sweating and fear of having heart attack from which escape is not possible , this can be panic attack.you should consult a psychiatrist.
