Suggest Treatment For Anxiety For A 75-year-old Female

My 75 yr old mother is starting to experience General anxiety whenever my father leaves her presence, whenever she thimks it is time to leave an event (she is always rushing to get home) and whenever driving in a car (driver is always going too fast). Any recommendations on first steps...we all feel she needs to take a pill to relax.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

She will need a good visit to determine the degree of her anxiety. Mild forms may benefit from counseling to help her handle her thoughts and fears in a healthy way.

If she has a more advanced form of anxiety or if counseling is not helping enough then medications can be added such as SSRI (citalopram or sertraline).
Regular checks with the doctor are needed when starting drugs for anxiety.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
