I had a motor vehicle accident approximately 3 years ago (I was the front passenger). I attended physio for approximatley 6 months due to upper arm numbness and whiplash (main impact to left hand side of neck). The numbness did subside and I ceased treatment. For the past two years I have woken at night with arm numbness, can not sit in positions that weight bear on either shoulder for more than 5 minutes without feeling discomfort. I had a MRI a few weeks ago and the results indicate degenerative changes in the mid-cervical spine with loss of the mid-cervical lordosis. C2/3 has disc desiccation with slight generalised disc bulge & mild right facet arthropathy. C4/5 has a mild generalised disc bulge and minimal indentation of the anterior thecal sac. C5/6 is disc desiccation with mild generalised disc bulge. A 2 to 3mm midline posterior disc bulge slightly indents the anterior aspect of the thecal sac. There is minor bilateral facet arthropathy. Minimal uncovertebral spurring without neural impingement. C6/7 minimal disc desiccation but no focal disc protrusion was identified. C7/T1 normal disc contour, height and signal is preserved. There is minor bilateral facet arthropathy. The overall comment was: Minimal degenerative change at a number of levels with slight indentation of the anterior thecal sac at C5/6 but no significant canal stenosis, foraminal narrowing or neural impingement is seen. Early facet arthropathy at C5/6 and C7/T1. Can you advise if these problems were as a result of the whiplash injury or are they just age wear and tear of the body - I am 41 years old and never had a neck or back problem prior to the mv accident.
