Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father is 80 years old and he was admitted to hospital a year back with H/o. unsteadiness of gait, inability to stand/walk weakness of left half of body. On examination he had ataxia and he was drowsy but oriented. CT brain confimed the diagnosis and on 2/10/2010 under GA, bilateral frontal and parietal burr holes were made and evacuation of SDH was dones. Procedure uneventful. And he is doing well in the postoperative period and fit to be discharged on 10/10/2010. After that Dr. has advised to take eption 100mg twice a day regularly. He was having it for next 3 months then he reduced the dosage to 1 daily at night. Then my father refused to come to Dr. and subsequently we have reduced the dosage once in two days for a month , then once in two days for a month and now he is having twice in a week at nights. Is it right to continue he is now normal. No problem as it is after reducing the dosage. Should I continue once in 3 days (ie. 2 tables in a week) or should I go and check the neuro surgeion or physician? Please advise. Thank you.
Welcome to HCM. I appreciate your concern for your father's health. Eptoin was prescribed to prevent seizures which may occur after any brain surgery or trauma. There has to be sufficient eptoin in the blood to prevent seizures. For this a minimum of 100 mg eptoin is required. Because your father has not had a seizure in spite of the inadequate dose, he probably does not require the eptoin. You can verify this with the neurosurgeon. Wish your father good health. If you have more queries, I shall be happy to answer them Dr Noble Zachariah
