General & Family Physician, Dr. Deepti M's Response
Hello, I have gone through your question. I believe the doctor must have identified athletes foot based on symptoms like appearance of the foot as it might have been very clear. Athletes foot is caused by a fungus called Tinea. Scraping test is generally used when diagnosis of fungal infections is in doubt. So, you don't need to worry about the diagnosis.
Just apply some over the counter(OTC) anti-fungal creams like clotrimazole over the affected area. Also soak your feet in salt water to provide soothing effect and helps it to heal faster. If your symptoms persist after using OTC anti-fungal for a week or so, do consult your doctor again as he might suggest you oral anti-fungal drugs.
