When I was little I used to have kidney reflux. They gave me a blue looking liquid medicine to help and it did. I went back a few years later and they took me off the medicine. Ever since then every time I use the bathroom, my urine stinks. Any advice to help with the odor?

Hello dear, Thank you for writing.
I think the blue-looking medicine you have been taking was blue metilene. It is used in low-grade vesico-ureteral reflux, to help sterilise the urine. Apparently your doctors discontinued the medication because you didn't need it anymore. How long has it been since you discontinued the medicine? Did you visit your doctor for follow-up ever since? The best Urology practices advise periodic follow-up, even after all the investigations result negative for reflux. Please consult with your Urology specialist.
Bad smell urine is not always a sign of vesico-ureteral reflux. Random urinry infection and dehydration may also cause your urine to smell bad. The next step would be performing a urine test and cunsulting your doctor with the results. In the meantime, drinking lots of water helps dilute the odor-causing substances in the urine, reducing therefore the urine smell.
I hope this was helpful. All the best, Dr. Alma
