Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have knee pain which comes on after I have walked approx 12 miles. I am currently traing for the moonwalk, a 26.2 mile night walk through london for charity. My pain is on the outside of my right knee, close to the knee cap. It feels bruised and still. The pain goes once I rest. I m about four wks away from the big event. Should I see my GP? Or could you recommend a knee support? Could the pain be coming from my back? I do have a slight tear in a disc in my lower back which showed on an MRI about 3/4 yrs ago. I don t get back pain since having physio to correct posture and strengthen core muscles. Really want to do the walk and worried that the knee pain will prevent me completing the full 26.2 miles.
A consult with an orthopedic will be necessary as a physical examination and a few tests will be required to confirm/rule out injuries or tears of ligaments or meniscus in the affected knee.
If any tests return positive signs and arthroscopy may be necessary at the earliest. Only your doctor can decide whether or not you can take part in the run, so if you really wish to do so then visit a doctor at the earliest or else the run can prove to be harmful for your knee.
Best wishes.
