Suggest Treatment For Back Pain Caused Due To Injury

Hi, I injured my tail bone some years ago helping move a piano. Xrays showed nothing, but he pain was very real for long time. I simply began using a pillow with cutout for tail bone area. Research only showed surgery to remove TB or I read another about interrectal correct, neigher appealed to me. Now 5 years later, it is somewhat better but still know it is there when sitting on any hard surface or lifting anything to heavy, over 100 lbs.

Is there any other course of action I can take? Oh I am 56, 6'3 and about 285lbs.

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

Ideally the best thing would have been to get examined by neurologist for injuries and nerve test. By testing your power, bulk, reflexes etc we can localize the site of the problem some what.

There are three possible sites where injury may have occured. Here is a simplified way how we can test them-

It may be more appropriate to do an MRI of the spine. What happens very often is that the x ray misses the findings, especially initially. It is very common. I will suggest an MRI. This is a more detailed study and we have better chances of picking up the changes than an x ray.

Also I will suggest an nerve conduction velocity (NCV). The idea is that the MRI may not pick up all the possible changes. Very often, the Injury may have taken at a place lower than the spine, say like the nerve root (radicle) or the nerve itself. This can be picked up by an NCV easily.

A third spot may be the muscles injury. It is quite a real possibility. And may be picked up by the MRI too.

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
