Suggest Treatment For Bad Taste In Mouth With Chronic Rhinitis

Hi, MY DAD IS 80 YRS OLD AND HAS RECENTLY BEEN TO HOSPITAL FOR A CHRONIC RHINITUS INFECTION THAT THEY THOUGHT HAD TURNED CANCEROUS, IT HADNT, AND HE WAS GIVEN THE ALL CLEAR. HE STILL HAS AN AWFUL TASTE IN HIS MOUTH AND FINDS IT HARD TO EAT BECAUSE OF THIS, HE HAS LOST ABOUT 1.5 STONE OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS AND SEEMS TO BE GETTING REALLY DEPRESSED AS WELL. HE IS VERY RELUCTANT TO GO BACK TO HIS GP AS HE IS SCARED HE WILL BE TAKEN INTO HOSPITAL AND NOT RETURN. DOES THIS LINK IN WITH THIS TYPE OF INFECTION OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE GOING ON?

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Loss of taste is common in elderly usually due to medications and associated neural changes.
2. Maintaining good oral hygiene, salt water gargling along with vitamin supplements is known to improve taste better.
3. More ingredients for taste is necessary as increased concentration will improve receptors sensitivity. It is not linked to infection.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
