Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a bartholin abscess two years ago that they lanced and drained. It came back a week later and they drained it and put a catheter in it for a week or so. I had no further problems for two years. It is now back. Would you suggest going on with a marsupilization (not sure if that s spelled right), the removal surgery, or back to the other treatments. I m tired of having these.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Marsupialization of the Bartholin's gland is generally indicated when there is a large abscess that makes surgical excision of the gland difficult. In this operation, the surgeon opens wide the wall of the abscess and allows the purulent discharge to drain. The membrane of the abscess is then sutured to the vaginal mucosa and to the skin. This would help to form granulation and re-epithelialization of the wound from the bottom of the abscess to the top. The operation can be performed quickly under local anesthesia and achievement of hemostasis is not difficult. In your case, since the infection appears to be recurring, it would be better to go for surgical removal or marsupialization. Kindly consult Surgeon for its evaluation and appropriate management. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
