Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I use minoxidil for beard growth. After 11 months i have a pretty decent beard from almost nothing but most of it is vellus. I know people personally who have done this managed to get their hairs to terminal and have kept what they have gained upon cessation of minoxidil (they stopped almost two years ago). Recently i asked a dermatologist on a seperate board who suggested progesterone cream. Problem is that to my knowledge it inhibits the enzyme 5a-reductase which converts testosterone to dht. I know from studying it that dht is essential for maturing and the linear growth of facial hair. Now i dont claim to know more than him and i know this is an off label use and the science is in somewhat of a gray area. Nevertheless using an anti androgen (dht in this case) like progesterone would surely be the opposite of what i am trying to achieve by maturing the follicle to shed the vellus and regrow a terminal hair which as i say is the way i know friends of mine have achieved permanent results. I have the feeling he maybe didnt read my post and provided advice based on scalp hair. Can anyone offer advice. It seems i am yet to find the key to maturing the vellus i have attained
No, he has advised you properly. Steroids have certain dramatic effects on the human body one among is to maintain the maturation of hair follicles if they are because of alopecia.
Yes, the scalp response is more prominent than the male facial hairline. You can also visit another dermatologist for the second opinion if you are not satisfied with the treating one.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
