Suggest Treatment For Bleeding From Ear After Injury

My friend was recently hit in the ear with a rubber ball. He wasn t knocked out but he was slight bleeding from the ear. He had trouble hearing while I was walking him down to the nurses office. I ve had a concussion before so I asked him basic questions like, what time is it right now? He answered with I don t know. I also asked him to say his months and he had trouble but he said them all in order. Should I be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Ear is divided into external, middle and inner ear. The external is the one seen outside with pinna and external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane, the membrane separating the external ear from the middle ear. The middle ear has the auditory ossicles, the bones of the ear carrying the sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. It also has attic and antrum. The inner is the one which has the nerve component of the hearing system. It converts the mechanical into electrical signal which are passed to the brain via the nerve.

Hearing is good only when all the components works properly and synchronized. There are many conditions affecting different parts of ear causing hearing disturbance. External injury may lead to rupture of tympanic membrane which results in loss of hearing. Even the blood clot obstructing the external canal may also leads to hearing loss. Depends on the additional symptoms relating to the brain involvement, further management will be decided. Visit the ENT specialist for complete evaluation and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
