Suggest Treatment For Bloating, Abdominal Distension, Stomach Ache And Reflux

I ve had these symptoms for a long time and they are eerily similar to celiac disease... fi only to me; recent blood test was negative for celiac disease antibody panel 1 Symptoms: bloating, abdominal distension, painful stomach, reflux and pain when bending over to tie shoes, etc... certain foods give me really smelly gas... broccoli, yellow cheese, excess milk intake, asparagus, all when they did not in the past. Over the years, I have reduced my bread intake and started watching my consumption of MSG, gluten, leavened bread and carbonated sodas... I m 49 yr old w/f from the southeast and very active physically, sports, etc... my entire life. HT/WT are proportional except for this wheat belly ... lost an inch or two on waist due to measures mentioned above in the past 18+ months w/out exercise. Eat lots of salads now... watch dressing.. oil and vinegar based only now...

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have been taking lots of salads. It will be better if you take salads after steaming or boiling. This will help to reduce symptoms of bloating, abdominal distension, stomach ache and reflux. Avoid taking food that triggers your system to cause gastritis, acidity and reflux. Get clinically examined to detect ulcer (peptic / esophageal, etc.). Get endoscopy, barium swallow of upper digestive system, lab tests, etc., done.

If ulcer is detected you will be treated with antibiotics, PPIs and H-2 blockers. Your system should respond to treatment being given. If not, your treating doctor will recommend surgery. Take high fiber diet to avoid constipation, constipation triggers gas formation, bloating and stomach ache. Take adequate amount of water and fluids to avoid so that you are not dehydrated. Dehydration triggers constipation and hence the symptoms. Get imaging tests done to rule out liver dysfunction, gall stones, etc. If it is detected it will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
