Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had bright red blood in my stool for quite some time now(over a year), and it is accompanied by pain (moderate to severe at times but not unbearable). It comes and goes depending on how much I am eating or drinking it seems. When it first started over a year ago it seemed to hurt much much more and stuck around for a really long time before going away. Now it doesnt seem so severe and it comes and goes more quickly and more often. I also have cramps sometimes. I haven't been too concerned because I figure it is just hemorrhoids. I guess my question is does that sound right, or should I get checked out? I have read a lot online and I don't really think I should be too concerned as it sounds like hemorrhoids.
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can. In most cases, causes of bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time. Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
