Suggest Treatment For Blood Urination In Elders

Hi Doctor,

My dad is a diabetic and currently 77 years old. Lately due to weather is cold here in Melbourne, he noticed that when he pees, there are some blood stains found in his undergarments. They are not dark but rather light in colour. Please advise what is the next course of action we should take, appreciate your kind advice. Thank you.

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Any presence of blood in urine is serious issue in elderly.
2. He needs to get an urine microscopic examination for WBC, epithelial cells and bacteria to rule out urinary tract infection. In the elderly, fever and burning pain presentation might be late
3. If no urinary tract infection, next course of action would be ultrasound abdomen evaluation to rule out any tumors or stones in kidney and urinary tract. Get Urine test done at the earliest.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
