Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I sem to be suffering from a bone spur in my right heel. One cause of bone spurs is a calcium deposit. I am taking vitamin D with calcium for bone loss. This pain in my heel just started a week ago. Should I reduce my calcium intake? I have been taking the supplement for about 9 months. I just got Dr Scholls jell heel cups for my shoes. Thank you. Have a great day.
The bone spur has formed due to long term stress on the foot, and not due to calcium supplementation. The calcium deposits in the area are due to it being injured and strained repeatedly, which you probably did not notice, since you did not have significant pain until a week ago. This can be due to anything from walking too much to climbing and heavy lifting.
Yes, the heel cushioning would be a good place to start. Some people find that physiotherapy sessions help to manage the pain, and usually a short course of anti-inflammatories like diclofenac or celecoxib will help to calm down the swelling around the area. Ultimately, you will have to pinpoint the type of activity that has triggered the strain, and try to just reduce it a little to prevent the pain from worsening.
There is no need to reduce your calcium intake, if you are experiencing bone loss elsewhere this will be important to maintain your bone density.
Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have further questions.
Regards, Dr. Teh
