Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the last 4 months approximately I have had ongoing bowel issues. I am recovering from thyroid surgery for thyroid carcinoma. These bowel issues are new to me even though I have spinal cord injury (for the past 23yrs). I am frequently very gassy, am passing small, thin stools and some tummy pains sometimes - any ideas? Thank you!
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of thyroid surgery for thyroid carcinoma, have bowel issues since 4 months in the form of gases, passing small thin stools, some tummy pains sometimes. As per the history you have provided I would advise you the following: First of all get the blood tests for Free T3, Free T4 and TSH aster a gap of 3 days of stopping thyroxin. IF there is hypothyroidism as may be the present dosages are less, addition of proper supplementation may help recover from the tummy problems that you have. Tests of stool and an antibiotic and metronidazole therapy if required will help recover. If there is no relief with these therapies you need further clinical evaluation, colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen for proper diagnosis and further management.
