Suggest Treatment For Bruised Calf

My thirteen year old daughter fell and hit the side of her calf yesterday. she said it hurt but it didnt seem to bother her. I could see no swelling or bruising but there was the slightest graze and slight redness around where she had hit her leg. This morning when my daughter woke up the first thing she realized was that her calf was hurting. She came down and told me about it and when I examined her sore calf I saw that she had a purple bruise about the size of a golf ball on her leg. I usually would shrug of a bruise but this bruise had a centre, in which didnt have any brushing on it. So basically she got a bruise in a circle and the centre there is no bruise- just normal skin. She also said it hurts to touch and when she moved her leg the calf hurts. Thank you. I just wanted to know about the strange bruise because I have never seen a bruise in a ring before. -Indra Wills.

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
From description it seems to be grade 2 calf strain. There is partial tearing of muscle fibres . You can identify this level of strain by the sharp pain at the back of the leg that hurts when walking on it.

I advice you to follow the below mentioned guidelines -

* Give adequate rest to the involved muscle group and avoid any movement that causes pain
* Ice packing once in every 2 hours over the affected area
* Local application of muscle relaxant gel
* Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation.
*Wrap the calf with a compression bandage to help keep swelling under control.
Full recovery takes approximately 5-8 weeks.Be careful not to wrap the bandage too tight.
*Keep the leg elevated when seated, and when you need to be up on the injured leg, insert a heel pad in your shoe to help shorten the calf muscle, which takes a portion of the strain off it.
Full recovery takes approximately 5-8 weeks.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
