Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
If I bang my hands or feet hard against something I end up with popped, bruised veins. They swell and hurt for days. Most recently, I hit my hand against a metal chair and had a finger that turned black and blue for a week, radiating from popped blood vessel/vein. Am I lacking in a vitamin or is it the start of veinous disease? I ve never smoked but I have very long arms and legs, I m 55. I am thinking that it might be a circulation issue.
It is common for everyone to have some bruising if hit hard against something. If this occurs following trivial or minor incidents, or takes longer than usual to disappear, this may suggest issues with blood clotting mechanism or weak connective tissue (as in vitamin C deficiency). It will be fine if you discuss the same with your doctor for a basic evaluation. Initial tests include blood count, peripheral smear, bleeding time and coagulation profile. Meanwhile, take plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits to correct vitamin C deficiency if any.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
