Suggest Treatment For Bruising And Swelling On The Knee After A Fall

I am 57 years old. One week ago I was playing tug of war with my 8th grade students on the last day of school. Our side lost the game when we were pulled over. I ended up falling very hard on my knee. Now it is bruised, and there is swelling from knee to ankle. It is stiff, but not extremely painful. It hurts a bit when I first stand up, but the pain is not terrible.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM.

This is probably just knee contusion and I dont think there is sme more severe issueTo reduce the swelling from a foot or ankle injury, rest to avoid walking on the injured leg use ice packs, wrap the knee with compression bandage, and elevate the foot on a stool or pillow. If swelling and pain is severe or doesn't improve with home treatment, see your doctor ad do Xrays of knees to evaluate possible bone damage: LAter if pain persist you ll have to do MRI scan to see if there is some ligament or mensiceal tear.

Wish you good health. Regards
