Hi,
Following are the probable conditions of your pain:
1) Fracture rib
2) Costochondritis
3) Inflammation and spasm of intercostal muscles that help in respiration
4) Pneumothorax
5) Pleurisy if any fractured rib punctured or pressed on pleura of lungs
In all the above conditions, breath taking is painful results in
sharp pain. I shall recommend the following:
1) Chest X-ray AP and PA view
2) If necessary
ultrasound imaging of chest
The following are treatment guidelines:
1) NSAIDs like Ibuprofen twice daily for pain relief.
2) If fractured rib exists, pain control forms the crux. If NSAIDs are not enough, opioid analgesics like
hydrocodone can be taken.
3) Most of the rib fractures heal by themselves in 1 or two months.
4) During this period there is a risk of developing pneumonia due to
shallow breathing. That's why pain relief is of utmost importance.
5) Along with pain relief antispasmodics or muscle relaxants are to be prescribed to ease respiratory movements without pain.
6) Tab.
Aceclofenac plus
chlorzoxazone is a good combination to be taken twice daily for 1 week.
7) Once the pain gets reduced, go for
physical therapy where breathing exercises will be taught to restore the muscle power.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
