My boyfriend hit his head on the car door. He has a large red bump on the back of his head that has puss coming out of it. He is complaining that there is a lot of pressure and he has a headache. Should we go to the emergency or keep applying ice and polysporin

Hi there,
I am Dr. Deepak, I work in Emergency Department, where I see many of the my patients with injury to their head. You mentioned that your boyfriend had injured himself on the car door, then he developed a red bump on the back of his head, which has puss coming out. He is complaining of lot of pressure and he has headache.
I think what you meant by saying puss, is clear slight yellow coloured fluid was oozing out from the injury site. I feel your boy friend had a minor head injury, as mechanism of injury was minor and he didn't loose consciouness. He is having some amount of headache. Give it some time and he should be all right. You did the right thing by applying ice and polysporin.
I would further recommend to keep a watch over few things like
1. he is having vomiting or sensation of vomiting
2. He is feeling weakness or numbness on one side of the body. left or right side.
3. he has developed bluish discolouration around the eye or behind the ear.
4. there is continuous bleeding from the injury site, or nose or ear.
5. if he has an episode of seizure, if he is not a known patient of epilepsy.
I would advice your boy friend to relax for some time. He can take some painkiller for his pain and when he feel comfortable, he can start doing remaining tasks of the day.
Thank you,
Hope your concern was dealt with and hope your boy friend has a speedy recovery.
