My husband fell from a ladder today. He fell onto a toilet. His right buttock and side hurts very badly when he moves and he gets a terrible burning sensation that he relieves by rubbing it. Should I take him to the er? He thinks it s just muscular and they won t be able to do anything

Hello! Sorry to hear that.
It is important to know the height from which he fell off to understand the intensity of the injury. Burning sensation of the buttocks could be due to a minor nerve injury that could be a result of the blunt trauma when he fell off on the buttocks. A physical exam along with image studies like an X-ray or MRI scan of spine may be needed in case the pain and burning sensation persists or worsens or if it is associated with other symptoms like numbness, swelling, difficulty in movements or decreased sensation over the area. Try to sleep on the opposite side, keep the hip immobile, avoid walking or weight bearing on that side. Over the counter pain medications like acetaminiphen or ibuprofen would be helpful. Avoid applying ice or heat pads for a long time as it may worsen the burning sensation in case of nerve injury. Hope this helps.
