Suggest Treatment For Burning Sensation At The Wound Site On The Knee

I have MRSA and was told to use Mupirocin Ointment 2% on an infected area on my knee. The infected area is from stiches that were removed after a knee replacement. The area was scraped as I started applyig the ointment on last Thursday. The open area now burns.

Podiatrist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. As a podiatrist we use Mupirocin ointment frequently for wound care similar to your situation. If the burning initially started with application of the ointment, I would suggest stopping the application of the ointment to the wound, clean it with sterile saline and apply clean bandages, there is no other substitute to my best recollection for MRSA that is as effective as Mupirocin.

Most likely you might be having some form of mild allergic reaction to the ointment. Continue taking your antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Samuel Parmar
