Suggest Treatment For Burning Sensation During Frequent Urination And Severe Headaches

Hi. I have a history of UTIs and have taken MACRObid for successful treatment. This last UTI I took Macrobid for 7 days with symptoms of frequent and burning urination. Unfortunately it did not stop the symptoms as it normally did in the first few days. I started feeling pain in my left flank and immediately went to ER to get some help. I was prescribed Septra for 7 days. I am on my third day of treatment and feel awful. Burning during urination has stopped but I have experienced excruciating headaches, severe abdominal cramps, shortness of breath and my flank pain has severely increased and is on now both sides. Is my kidney infection getting worse or are these symptoms of the drug SEPTRA? Upon research these are note a severe side effects. Please provide guidance as I have never reacted this strongly to an antibiotic.

Hello,

You have a history of having been infected with UTI before this episode of your symptoms. Since after taking treatment your symptoms persist, you are suggested to have a repeat urinalysis (C/S and R/E). The antibiotics will be given to you accordingly. Take care of your hygiene and have plenty of water orally. Avoid sex for a couple of days. Ideally your sex partner should also get urinalysis done to detect UTI and get treated if reports are positive. If you have allergy to Sulpha drugs you should have informed to your treating doctor before hand. Stop taking Septran if you are allergic to it.

Consult your treating doctor so that some other medication can be prescribed other than septran. Recurrent UTI may lead to infections in the bladder, prostrate and trigger kidney problems. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a urologist and get blood workouts and required investigations done so that proper treatment can be started. In the meantime to get relief from abdominal cramps you can take antacids and spasmol, one SOS when required. Take analgesics to ease headache.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
