Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Cancer at stage 3b means that it has limited surgical options. The tumor has spread away from the cervix and into surrounding structures in the pelvic area. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be given and this can cause the tumor to become smaller.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy have to be given as a part of treatment. Side effects are there and the benefits in extending survival of the patient are more. Therefore giving treatment by chemotherapy and radiation therapy are a must.

Many patients are taking treatment by these methods and the side effects in present day chemotherapy are less and varies with the patient. The doctor will guide your mother and what are the expected side effects of the medication given in chemotherapy. Please do not worry.
