Suggest Treatment For Chronic Cough After Carotid Artery Surgery

yes, please.... I had carotid artery surgery on July 20, 2015. On Aug. 4 I was outside walking, feeling really good. By lunch time, I had a bad sore throat, felt like I was taking the flu, actually went to bed in the afternoon to rest. First time since surgery. Some time during this week, I developed a chronic cough. Have had the cough every since even though my doctor has taken me off of lisinopril on Aug. 24 and the hospital put me on carvedilol after surgery and I was taken off of that on Aug. 17, thinking that maybe these two medications were causing the cough. I ve also been on a round of steroid pills, just got through with antibiotic Z pack as of yesterday (Sunday). NOTHING touches this cough. Even been put on an inhaler and cough syrup to no avail. Still coughing. Can you please help me with this???

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the persistent dry cough not responding to various medications including antibiotics can be related to:
- Viral bronchitis
- Drug resistance bacterial infection
- Allergy related
- Others

In my clinic, after thorough clinical examination, I do recommend an x-ray chest with or without pulmonary function test to get into the further details of the cause and guide accordingly. As much of the therapy has been tried with no results, few points I want to highlight here:
- Deep breathing exercises
- Meditations and YOGA
- Avoid smoking (active and passive) if applicable
- Avoid exposure to atmospheric pollen, if required use face mask wisely
- Gargles with salted lukewarm water added Karvol capsules

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
