Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is only 54 years old and has a medical history of diabetes for about 20 years. At age 42 he had a heart attack and quad bypass....and later that year a drug eluting stent was placed. He has now been diagnosed with cirrohsis (sp) per imaging. He does not drink. The cirhosis is due to NASH. He does not smoke either. He had a condition called Familial Mediteranean (sp) Fever diagnosed about 24 yrs ago but he had had symptoms of it for much longer.....it s an inflammatory disease. He had an EGD the day before yesterday and it showed Grade 2 varices. They will start Nadolol. He seems to be taking things in stride but I am crumbling frankly. Anyway: I m afraid of the mortality implications given his combined problems. He s extremely fatigued, he does have an enlarged spleen and gallstones.....and his abdomen is enlarged too of course. He does not have yellowing etc. But I want him to live (and he wants to) as long as possible in a healthy manner. Aside from medications and regular follow up, what diet is best? I m assuming low salt , low fat, increase in vegetables and fruits? What else can I do to help him (aside from total support etc.)?
