Suggest Treatment For Cold And Low Grade Fever

hi, I m currently experiencing what I thought was a cold. I m now on day 16. It started with a sore throat and after two days dropped into my chest. My sinuses are somewhat congested and my chest is very congested (blowing and coughing massive amounts of mucus) and coughing frequently and sometimes uncontrollably. I ve been running a low grade fever (100 - 100.5). I went to a clinic last Monday (6 days ago) and was told it was a cold but just incase I was subscribed doxycycline monohydrate (100 mg) for seven days. I have one days worth of this left and I have not improved one bit. Do I just have one of the worst cold of my life or should I make an appoint with my primary care doctor? I am 66 years old and in good health. Thirty years age I had a bad cold that turned into pneumonia. What do you suggest ?

Hi,

As per you complain it seems that you are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection and along with it there seems to be superseded bacterial infection.

In that case, the antibiotic is a must and if Doxycycline is not working you need to get antibiotic changed. As of now, you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:

-Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a lukewarm solution.

-Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti-allergic Levocetirizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen.

-Take cough expectorant like Mucinex.
-Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily.
-Do steam inhalations.
-Avoid spicy and chilled foods.
-Sip on warm water throughout the day.
-Do warm compresses over the chest.

Hopefully, the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsens consult a General Physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
